Spider in the Room

“You see that there?”

“What?”, she said.

“That spider, in the corner. That little one-“

“Yeah…”

“I think bit me last night” Tony lifts his face from staring at the ceiling and turns on his side to show Mary his spider bite.

“See?, It’s right there”.

“Yeah. I see it”. Mary didn’t think much of the spider bite. She passes her finger on the few red dots on his back.

“Well honey… You know, it doesn’t look that bad. It’s just a few spider bites.

“Just a few? Just a few spider bites?” spits out tony. He feels emasculated by her remark and changes the look on his face, scowls and snaps back.

“Well, well, well… What do we have here?” “You complain every day and night about your fuckin’ stretch marks-”

He lifts his body from the bed. Siting on his knees, with arms wide open, as if he were some kind of Shakespearian actor, addressing her.

“About how fucking fat they look, and worm like. Well guess what? I’ve never told you the truth. They do look ugly, and big, and worm like. But hey! You did that to yourself. At least these come off. Yeah. It’s a spider bite, but at least I tolerate it. You complain every day. Me, all I’m trying to do is get some sympathy from you. “It itches. All I want is for you to scratch my bites. That’s all.

So could you please just…just scratch my back?” Tony looks at her with pleading eyes and throws his torso on the bed.

Mary looks shocked at what she’s seeing. A total stranger to her eyes. She lifts herself off the bed and stares at Tony. Tony lifts himself with his shoulder and stays in a seemingly comfortable position and looks at Mary with a smile.

“What? –

Was it something I said?”… He stares at Mary, acting as if he had no clue of what he had done, an obvious outburst, which he wanted to ignore happened.

Mary scorns her face, pauses for a moment  and leaves the room, slamming the wooden door behind her.

“You pig!” She yells before leaving the house.

We hear how she slams the porch’ screen door, and turns on her engine.

Tony flings his back on the bed and stares at the ceiling.

He lights up a cigarette and looks at the spider in the corner.

He takes a puff at his cigarette and slowly blows into the spider’s direction.

“You motherfucker”.
